INCOMPETENCE---THE UPDATE

More than two weeks ago (May 8 or 9), Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal sent a plan to the Obama administration (“for quick approval”) to build up barrier islands along the coastline so that oil from the Gulf spill would be stopped before it reached the mainland. With soil obtained from dredging the Mississippi, the most ecologically-delicate estuaries and beaches could be protected from the worst of the damage. Up until now, the existing barrier islands have caught vast quantities of the crude oil, and there is substantial scientific support for Jindal’s plan, which was estimated to cost about $350 million.

As of today (May 24), the Obama Administration has provided NO response to this request.

  1. So let me get this straight. Obama gets slammed for trying to save the U.S. economy by bailing out big banks. (Or should I say continuing the bailout started by the Bush administration).

But then he gets slammed for NOT trying to save the U.S. environment by bailing out big oil? Why not let the "states decide" which course of action to take?

Why not make BP clean up their own mess? Why doesn't Bobby Jindal ask BP for the $350 million? Why not pay for it from their 2010 1st quarter profits of: (From BPs own web site)
"•BP's first-quarter replacement cost profit was $5,598 million, compared with $2,387 million a year ago, an increase of 135%."

Whatever happened to "Drill baby, drill!"?

  2. The ultimate financial responsibility of BP for damage it has caused is not in question. It will take years to wade through the lawsuits, but it will happen.

Regarding remediation and preventive efforts along the barrier islands, these are within the exclusive jurisdiction of the federal government, so Jindal and other state officials have no choice but to appeal to Obama to DO SOMETHING. Yet for some reason, he can't be bothered. There is no good explanation (and none has been offered) for the administration's failure to respond to the requests that have been made.

Unlike the situation in Katrina, where the federal government could not legally respond to the problems until asked by Louisiana's governor (Kathleen Blanco, at that time), the feds have original and exclusive jurisdiction over all our territorial waters in the Gulf.
